It could be easy for Mallory Sills to forget that her insight on the style and beauty world is connecting with people – mainly women – across the globe.
The 27-year-old St. Charles resident discusses all things fashion and style in her podcast, “The Style Success Podcast,” which she records from home, sometimes with guests.
Facebook has let her connect with her listeners, who have identified themselves as residents of India, Germany and Brazil, among other countries, she said. She said it’s always exciting when they let her know how an episode affected them.
“It’s a great reminder that I’m not just sitting at home talking to myself, that people are listening,” Sills said.
Since launching “The Style Success Podcast” in February 2015, Sills has published about 30 episodes, which have such titles as “Why You Don’t Need a LBD (Little Black Dress),” “Decision Fatigue & Your Wardrobe” and “You’re Cleaning Out Your Closet Wrong.”
It is available through such podcast listening platforms as iTunes.
Sills, whose credentials include a certification in image consulting from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, recently took time to talk with reporter Ashley Sloboda. What follows is an edited version of their conversation.
Ashley Sloboda: Can you explain what you do as a personal stylist and image consultant?
Mallory Sills: I work with clients one-on-one, both virtually and in person. Basically, I help my clients build a wardrobe and an image that represents who they are, what they do. For me, it’s about helping them build a wardrobe that makes them feel confident about themselves.
Sloboda: Why did that line of work appeal to you?
Sills: I always was really, really into clothes and fashion growing up. Even from a really early age I was always really drawn to expressing myself through my clothes. I was really, really, really shy growing up. I always say clothes were my voice before I really found my voice. I was really very infatuated with anything fashion and style related. When I got older and found out this was something you could do with your life, I did everything I could in college to get as much education and experience to be able to do this.
Sloboda: Why did you decide to begin a podcast?
Sills: I had this desire and this feeling that I could reach more people with my messaging. To me, I look at style as much more than what we wear. I’m big on how it makes you feel. Fashion magazines aren’t talking about that, and some of the other style podcasts weren’t talking about that. It felt right to start a podcast at that time.
Sloboda: What’s it like to actually launch a podcast? I’m guessing it’s not as easy as it sounds.
Sills: I sat down and taught myself how to produce it, edit it. It really is a matter of having patience to learn it. Once you get in the habit of it it’s not quite as hard as everyone thinks. Kind of like anything else in life, when you enjoy putting the content out there it doesn’t feel that hard.
Sloboda: Where do you record the podcast?
Sills: I actually record it right from my own home. It was really just a matter of getting some of the equipment that I needed. I’m able to do it all from my computer.
Sloboda: Do you try to adhere to a schedule of when new episodes are released?
Sills: When I first started – I would say probably the first year from February 2015 until December 2015 – it was basically whenever I could get them out, whenever I felt inspired. My numbers kept growing, and I had listeners reach out to me, saying they enjoyed the content. It got me more inspired and motivated. Since the beginning of this year I started doing a new episode every other week. Starting in August, I’ve ramped it up to every week, every Tuesday.
Sloboda: Just from reading the descriptions of the episodes, it sounds like a fun, lighthearted podcast to listen to. How would you describe your podcast?
Sills: I’d like to believe that it’s fun because I have a lot of fun producing the content. I wanted to make fashion and style more approachable for the average woman. I always try to keep things real with everybody. My podcast isn’t going to be something where you listen to five things every woman needs in her wardrobe because women don’t need the same things.
Sloboda: How do you come up with the topics?
Sills: I’ll get inspired by what someone was asking me. Sometimes it comes up in an appointment with a client. Sometimes it’s even my friends who inspire me. A lot of my friends listen to my podcast and text me with suggestions. I have a private Facebook community for listeners of the podcast. When someone else asks me about something, I know so many other women are wondering the exact same thing.
Sloboda: Is it mainly women listening, or do men listen, too?
Sills: I primarily focus it around women. However, I have a few men who have written reviews on the podcast.
Sloboda: What are some of the topics you’ve most enjoyed discussing?
Sills: That’s a hard one. I think one of my favorite episodes is probably talking about why your size is irrelevant to having style. A lot of women feel like their size directly influences how they look or how they can dress. Another recent one was talking about why we need to stop asking for generic style advice because so many people ask me, “Well, what should I wear? What are the five things I need in my wardrobe?” I’m very [against] generic style help. I firmly believe every single woman has different needs, and we’re all different people. Your style can be this really powerful and amazing tool to represent who you are. Let it be as unique as you are as an individual.
Sloboda: How does it feel, knowing your podcast is now sponsored?
Sills: It feels really good. It feels really exciting that other people are enjoying the content, or want to get their companies in front of my listeners. I’ve had some companies reach out to me. I had no idea it would grow to become this thing that people are listening to around the world. I’m already over my largest month of downloads, and the month [August] isn’t even over yet. I’m about to reach 50,000 listeners.
