Falling forward into fashion – Coastal Illustrated

It will soon be time to fold up those shorts, pack away those pastels and put the sundresses and linen away for what passes as fall and winter in the Golden Isles, but this year’s fashion trends are so comfortable and on-point that it won’t be at all depressing to bid farewell to those favorite flip-flops and warmly greet your favorite boots and turtlenecks.

Sandra Delaney at Yellow Canary has been unpacking, steaming and perfecting her displays for the upcoming season, and she has a bit of advice, even with the spectrum of rich fall colors just crying out to be worn.

“Red and black are always the No. 1 colors for fall,” the avowed Georgia Bulldog said.

But, if you’re not one to red and black every day, Delaney has a shop full of can’t-go-wrong alternatives.

First of all, ruffles are the next big thing. Poet shirts, reminiscent of those of the 1980s are back in style, as is frayed, distressed denim and wide-leg jeans. Mineral-washed (think a more refined acid wash) tops and dresses are favorites, and many tops feature bell sleeves and lace-up necklaces.

On the accessories front, Delaney recommends the OTNB line of shoes, which she says are both comfortable and stylish.

And, in keeping with the somewhat Bohemian theme of this season’s offerings, even accessories are relaxed.

Delaney says a hot item is a leather wrap necklace with a pendant at the ends.

Other trends that continue from previous seasons include the ever-popular cold-shoulder shirt, which features cut-outs, usually at the shoulders, and the always flattering off-the-shoulder look.

With that wardrobe full of new clothes, hair and makeup also should be considered.

Ashley Edenfield at Back Porch Salon and Spa in Redfern Village on St. Simons Island, says hairstyles won’t change much moving into fall.

“I cannot foresee this ‘lived-in’ trend slowing down anytime soon,” she said, adding that what stylists refer to as “lived-in hair” features natural textures and shadowed roots.

The coloring technique that allows for the shadowed roots began as the popular ombre trend a few years ago, and Edenfield said the look allows clients to go longer between hair color applications.

Of course, highlights will also ways be popular, but the tendency of brunettes to highlight with blonde shades is waning, she said. Now, shades of caramel and copper are popular highlight choices, which allow brunettes to go brighter and lighter around their faces without going blonder.

At the other end of the spectrum is what Edenfield calls fashion hair, and includes brightly colored “unicorn hair,” shades of silver and gray, pastels and vivid colors.

Fashion personality Kelly Osbourne, several years ago, caused a red carpet ruckus when she appeared at a Hollywood gala with her hair dyed light lavender. Fast forward a few years, and no one gives a young person with gray or light purple hair a second glance.

Edenfield said that a whole range of colors could be achieved with temporary dyes that shampoo out easily.

As far as haircuts and hairstyles, the bob and the “lob” (long bob) are perennial favorites.

“The bob or a variation of it is always in style,” Edenfield said, adding that short hair is barely a blip on the radar this spring, and that preferred lengths range from medium to ultra-long.

The flat-ironed look is becoming less of a “thing,” she said, explaining that because people take better care of themselves in general, being more careful is also showing up in styling trends.

Makeup is another landmine. Edenfield explained that with the explosion of social media and sites such as YouTube and Instagram, makeup tutorials are readily available, and people are able to follow high fashion trends from the get-go.

“Makeup is one of the most searched items on social media,” she said.

Most folks prefer a natural, or nearly natural look for daytime, but Edenfield said that for formal occasions, weddings in particular, more is definitely more.

“Makeup is no longer an afterthought for weddings,” she said.

But even for everyday, certain items matter. Eyelash extensions lead the way.

“Our lash business has increased like crazy; the eyelash extension trend has hit.”
