Perusing Patrick Ta’s Instagram, we spot the majority of the names on our aspirational best-friend list: Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, Ashley Graham, and Joan Smalls. The gang is definitely all here, and they all look radiant thanks to Ta’s skilled hand.

Many of the elite squad are out and about at NYFW, where they are still wearing that perfectly highlighted makeup look, confirming our suspicions that this wasn’t a passing summer fad.

“I really love bringing dimension to the face but without having it look harsh,” Ta tells us of his affinity for highlighting during a chat. “I think that contouring these days (is) either done too much or too little.”

To help you perfectly execute this look and help you transition it to fall, we got the rundown from the glam guru.

Ta suggests first contouring the skin with a cream or liquid foundation that is 2-3 shades darker than your skin and then blending your work. Next, he says to apply a liquid foundation on top (he likes the beautyblender for this step), applying it lightly on the areas that have already been contoured. He says applying the contour first helps create a look that is as natural as possible. Then he likes to highlight using MAC’s 224 Tapered Blending Brush and then blend with the beautyblender.

“From there, you bring a lighter shade to the center of your forehead, down the bridge of your nose, on the peak of the forehead, underneath the eyes, on your cupid’s bow, on your chin, (and) underneath the hallow of your cheekbones,” Ta advises. “By putting light there, it brings all those areas out, and it’s basically like you’re contouring without contouring.”

Ta says people with oily skin don’t need to be afraid of this radiant look. He advises prepping skin with an oil-free moisturizer, avoiding the areas that are prone to shine. Ta also says it’s very important to set the completed look in just the right places so you don’t look too matte.

“I only like to set (the area) around the nose, around the smile lines, the bridge of the nose, (and) the peak of the forehead, and I like to leave the rest of the face bare,” he tells us. “So if you’re taking a photo or just walking around, people can see that glow on your face.”

The celeb makeup artist says fall will give us an opportunity to play with the trend that gave us a glow all summer.

“If you can play up the eyes and the skin during fall you can either wear winged liners or just more fun lipsticks that are on the darker side,” he says. Ta suggests opting for a brown or burgundy lip and going with warmer blush colors.
