How Fashion Week Nail Artist Madeline Poole Brings a Glossy Edge to Office Style – Vogue.com

As many a New York woman will tell you, a weekly manicure is her regular indulgence. Of course, she’s conscious about where she “gets her nails did”—someplace ethical yet affordable, with a plethora of options to choose from—but it’s often a time of reprieve from the stresses of city life. And if she happens to be in the skillful hands of Madeline Poole, it’s also a time of colorful expression.

The nail artist is Sally Hansen’s Global Color Ambassador, after all, and her deft handling of a fine-tipped brush and mastery of hues in all combinations has this Maryland native buffing up the best in the business. She’s a regular fixture at fashion shoots and backstage at the Paris and New York runways. And while Poole’s fun, inventive taxicab manis are a calling card, it’s her vibrant yet laid-back tomboy style that also dazzles the industry folks.

Citing Dennis Rodman, Rihanna, Saved by the Bell’s Kelly Kapowski, and Vogue.com’s own Chioma Nnadi as style icons, the 30-year-old pro has culled a playful wardrobe made up of fancy kicks, punchy vintage finds, and funky pants in a smattering of shades that take her easily from one paint job to the next. As she tells Vogue.com, she had to learn her own color palette—what shades and cuts looked best on her—and ultimately what’s flattering on camera.

Here, Poole, who is working with Sally Hansen on developing new polish shades, tells us how she fell into the beauty world, how she’s always matching her mani to her outfit, and why she’s constantly on the hunt for a good tracksuit.

Dipping Her Polished Toes Into the Beauty World
I wasn’t interested in beauty at all—to be honest, that just sort of fell in my lap. I love clothes and dressing and style, but not necessarily fashion, if that makes sense. When I moved out to Los Angeles from Baltimore, I worked so many odd jobs it’s hard to say where my head was. I did some basic sewing for a fashion designer and the company ban.do, but I also was a nanny and worked on an ice cream truck. What I’m trying to say is, I was directionless until I was about 25. All I knew was that I was really good at making stuff. Then I got into having my nails done—always changing the color to match my outfit—and around that same time I worked on my first photo shoot as a prop stylist’s assistant. That’s where I first came across the world of editorial manicuring.

Hitting the Nail (Art) on the Head
I loved painting nails straightaway. I thought it would be a great job for me that would marry my interest in painting and fashion. My first “salon” was a desk in my brother’s studio apartment that I shared with him. I would just noodle around with the nail polish for hours and mix it with acrylic paint and all kinds of stuff that doesn’t belong on nails. I’d have my friends over for practice. Then I’d take a picture and put it on my Tumblr, which is now M.P. Nails. My friends would show people or share pictures on Facebook, and then the word spread quickly. I got a book deal with Chronicle just a few months into starting while I was still completing beauty school—I thank the Internet for that. The web of friends I’d made in L.A. introduced me to people in New York, so the first shows I did were with my peers. I think I did Eckhaus Latta and Hood By Air first. I didn’t have sponsorship or a team, so I was just figuring it out as I went.

A Glossy New Gig
A couple of years ago, I moved to New York from L.A., and around that same time Sally Hansen was looking for someone who would create nail looks for top designers that Hansen collaborates with during New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, as well as share the brand’s vision about color with global editors and influencers. I think nail care and the manicure is as important as the color application, so I really wanted to work with a brand that offered a range of products in addition to color. It’s fun! The people I work with are really open to my ideas and genuinely like the things I create, so it’s very supportive. My role is constantly expanding and growing; I’m involved in all the upcoming projects, including shade development. I’ve been to a lot of countries and cities I may have never otherwise had the chance to go to, like Moscow!

The Paint-Job Dress Code
There is no typical day, so I have a lot of different wardrobes and I’m always carrying a change of clothes in my bag, plus makeup, deodorant, all that. When I shop, I think, Is this gonna wrinkle easily or get dirty easily? I need to feel agile at work. I love a funky pant. I sit low on the ground on a tiny stool and carry around a bunch of tiny accoutrements, so I love pockets. I have this one carpenter-style denim jacket with four huge front pockets that I wear way too much. One thing is for sure, I pretty much only wear sneakers—unless I know I’m hopping from one Uber into another. I like sneakers that are washable so I can keep them clean, like Nike Flyknits. I’ve had the same pair for a long time, but they’re still bright white.

I try to be a little more festive for Fashion Week, put in a bit more effort, but also I need to wear things that transition well from work to not work, because I’m bouncing between attending shows and working backstage. When I’m not working, I wear a lot of sheer stuff, crop tops, and miniskirts, but those don’t really function well on the job.

The Color Ambassador of Her Own Wardrobe
I like fun colors and novelty prints, and I’ve never wanted to look normal or blend in. I wear a lot of vintage and thrift. I love Etsy, and I visit my family in Baltimore all the time, where there’s great, reasonably priced vintage. I love a good military surplus store. I have a pair of Eve Denim overalls that I wear constantly (lots of pockets, which is essential), and they always look fresh and wrinkle-free because they’re raw denim. I don’t really buy “designer” clothes unless they’re on super-sale, or if it’s a jacket, or if [I find] just a totally unbelievable piece. I live for a statement jacket and everything by Sandy Liang. I like online shops like L’Oéil and ASOS for the basics. I adore sunglasses. I have more than any one person could ever need, probably 40 pairs. I buy a lot of them vintage from Optical Sphere in Los Angeles, tons on Etsy, and I love Retrosuperfuture, Céline, A.D.S.R., Adam Selman, and Dries Van Noten.

Hair Did, Nails Did, Everything Did
There’s nothing that makes me happier than matching my manicure to my outfit. I try something new every time. I love wearing a rounded French manicure, evil eyes at the moon area, or a freaky metallic. I did this taxicab-inspired nail recently that I really enjoyed wearing. I thought it was going to bug me because it was so loud, but actually it just made every outfit look that much cooler. For a special night, sometimes I’ll wear a bright pink or orange eyeshadow or periwinkle liquid eyeliner by Stila. I wear NARS blush and a bit of extra concealer. Then I might do my hair. I like hairdos—pigtails, scrunchies, braids, ponytails, buns, and all that fun stuff!

Key Accessories
I wear four necklaces always—one is my International Girl Crew signature number necklace. Another is an “MP” charm; one reads “Spoil me” and another is a vintage Greek coin I picked up in Athens. And nine rings always: two are silver and turquoise from Mexico City, a few skinny gold rings from Turkey, one face ring made by my friend at Mondo Mondo, and one heart ring from Jordan Askill. Then I alternate my earrings. I always lose earrings, so I usually buy them at &Other Stories or Necessary Clothing on Broadway. My favorite earrings are matchstick flames made by Jiwinaia. I break them out for special occasions. I just got a great new bag from Opening Ceremony, and it’s covered in square crystals and has a ball-chain handle and a fur handle. I always accumulate a ton of stuff throughout the day, so I use this furry zebra tote from Zara. That’s when I pull the heels out of my bag. I have some really cool PVC Céline mules and yellow and crystal Giulietta heels that are my favorite.

A Woman of Leisure
I usually wear a matching sweatsuit when I travel, and a really fresh pair of sneakers and socks, always, because you have to take your shoes off at security. I like to be really cozy but ready to run into someone. One time I saw Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele in JFK, and she was in her signature tracksuit with tons of jewelry and all this matching luggage, sunglasses, and like four Chanel bags. She looked so iconic. I never bring more than a carry-on, though. The last place I went was Ocean City, Maryland, and then a few islands in Greece. Everywhere I go I get souvenirs—it’s my favorite way to shop, and I really like to get inspired by a location. I like to coordinate with the environment. In Ocean City I got this mint green and baby pink sweatsuit, really ’80s beach-surf style. I love that color palette so much. In Greece I got tons of handmade leather sandals and some of the coolest handmade one-piece swimsuits with matching bucket hats with veggie prints, ginghams, and seashell prints.
