The Complete Guide To Men’s Buzz Cuts – FashionBeans

In a demanding world where a man’s expected to manscape as well as meet his mortgage repayments, smash his squat PB as well as salary ceilings, and be as good a listener as he is able to stand his own in a scrap, it’s sometimes best to keep things simple.

Start with your hair. Or more specifically, start by buzzing it all off. The buzz cut – a firm favourite of men from Brad Pitt to army recruits – is the ultimate in classically masculine, low-maintenance hairstyles.

Cut short and usually uniform in length, buzzed hair doesn’t kink, curl or lie lank across your forehead, which means you won’t spend half an hour wrangling your locks into submission every morning. Not only that, but it works everywhere too – from the boardroom to a black tie ball.

Sounds good, right? To help you get the best buzz possible, we sat down with Adam Gore, founder of, and chief barber at, 2016’s UK Barbershop of the Year, Barberology, to get his two cents on how to buzz your hair at home, what you need to do it and how to tweak this timeless style to suit you.

Is A Buzz Cut Right For You?

As versatile as a buzz cut is, it’s not a one-size-fits-all style. Lumps, bumps, scars and the curvature of your skull are all things that play a part in determining how suited you are to a buzz cut, and which style of buzz cut works best with your head – so before committing to one, consider the shape of your bonce.

Gore advises taking a good look at yourself in the mirror (you could even try snapping selfies from different angles) to get to know your head shape better. “If your head has a protruding occipital bone [otherwise known as the bone at the lower-back of your skull], then it’s probably best to opt for a blend on the sides, rather than a uniform length, to create a more masculine, squarer shape.”

What You Need

Buzzing to give it a go? Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Quality clippers. “Preferably from an established brand, and with a rotary motor, as rotary motor clippers are better at removing bulk,” says Gore. A good set of clippers also lets you better hone your style, giving you the precision to the nail those subtle tweaks for different takes on the standard buzz cut.
  2. A set of guards. Ranging from #1 to #4.
  3. A soft-bristled brush. For keeping clippers clean and hair-free.

How To Do It

Start by ensuring your hair is both clean and bone-dry – wet hairs stick together, not only making it difficult to track your progress, but also causing your clippers to clog up.

Then, try grabbing some. “If you’re able to grab your hair with your hand, then it’s best to cut the bulk down first,” says Gore. So if you’re rocking hair that’s over an inch or so long, start with a #4 all over and then move down to your desired length; hair longer than that should be trimmed with scissors first to prevent jamming your clippers.

When you’re ready to shave, start at the top of your head and – using straight, front-to-back motions – gradually work your way through your hair, taking care to go over the same area several times until it looks uniform. Once you’re happy with the overall length, go one down on your guards and carefully clipper the edges of the neck and around the ears (a handheld mirror comes in handy here) to help streamline your style.

Types Of Buzz Cut

Want to tweak your look so it doesn’t scare the neighbours? Or give your cut more styling potential? Try subtly switching it up with a variation that works for you.

Induction

The shortest of all buzz cuts, the induction cut gets its name from its military origins. Achieved using clippers without a guard, if you’re after anything shorter, you may as well clean shave your head.

Men's Induction Buzz Cuts Hairstyles

Burr

A slightly less skinhead variation on the induction, the burr involves cutting the hair with clippers set on a #1, #2 or #3 guard.

Men's Burr Buzz Cuts Hairstyles

Butch

Longer than a burr, but still short. It’s done using clippers set on a #4 guard.

Men's Butch Buzz Cuts Hairstyles

Crew Cut

A buzz cut you can take home to your mum, the crew cut isn’t as severe as other shorter variations.

Says Gore: “The hair is tapered with clippers on the sides and back of the head, while the top is either clippered evenly with a longer clipper blade or is tapered towards the vertex (back of the top of the head) so that the hair is slightly longer on the front.” Which gives you a semblance of a fringe to play with if you don’t want the full force of your forehead on show.

Men's Crew Cut Hairstyles

Flat Top

Strong-lined and striking, the flattop is as close to sculpture as men’s hairstyles get. “It’s a high fade haircut where the hair on the top is clippered in a way that produces a flat surface when product [like a gel or pomade] is added,” says Gore.

“The hair on the top can range from half an inch to a whole inch depending on preference.”

Men's Flat Top Hairstyles and Cuts

High & Tight

Like an undercut, but with less hair on top, a high and tight cut is achieved by clippering the back and sides of the head using a #1 or #2 guard, and using a guard two sizes up on top (i.e. #3 or #4) to create contrast.

How To Style It

The beauty of a buzz cut is you don’t really need to worry about styling it; give it a rub with a towel once you’re out of the shower and you’re good to go.

That said, there are some products that can help keep your buzz looking its very best. “All you need is a little product like a light pomade or even a splash of coconut oil to keep your scalp healthy and smelling sweet, too,” says Gore.

Easy Tips to Perfect Smokey Eye Makeup – The Trend Spotter

easy-tips-to-create-smokey-eyes

A smokey eye is a timelessly sexy and classic makeup look. The smouldering style is unbeatable for nighttime and can even be reworked for daytime. Despite its enormous popularity, some women still avoid the makeup technique for fear that it’s too hard to create. Well, we’re here to banish that fear and show you just how easy a smokey eye can be with the right tips and tricks. From the classic black smokey eye to boldly coloured looks suited to your eyes, here’s everything you need to know to nail the smokey eye.

How to Create a Classic Black Smokey Eye

A classic black smokey eye is famous for a reason. The iconic makeup style looks good on everyone and is universally flattering. When looking for a sexy nighttime look, this is a simple go-to style that always works so it’s important to have it in your arsenal. Follow these quick tips and you’ll be nailing the black smokey eye in no time.

  1. Start by moisturising your eye area.
  2. Apply primer and add concealer to any dark under eye circles.
  3. Use a medium round brush to apply grey eyeshadow in an arch above the crease of your eye and blend downwards over your eyelids.
  4. Apply black kohl pencil to your upper lash line and smudge upwards over your eyelids.
  5. Use a small, angled brush to apply powder in a black or gunmetal shade to your lower lashline.
  6. Apply a silver eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyes.
  7. Add multiple coats of mascara to curled lashes.
  8. Finish by cleaning up any excess shadow with a cotton swab dipped in concealer.

Coloured Smokey Eyes

While a black smokey eye will always be a classic look, coloured smokey eyes offer unexpectedly beautiful results. More modern and vibrant than plain black, coloured smokey eyes are bold and can be highly flattering. One of the major benefits of this style is that it is lighter than black, meaning that if you go a bit overboard, you won’t end up looking like you’ve been in a fight! Coloured looks are also easier to pull off in the daytime than vampish blacks and are less vulnerable to visible smudging. All you need to do to make this look work is pick the right modern shade for your eye colour.

How to Get a Smokey Eye for Brown Eyes

Gorgeous brown eyes look good with nearly every shade of smokey eye. They look particularly fantastic, however, when paired with vibrant jewelled hues. Instead of a traditional black smokey eye, consider trying a more modern purple style instead. The unique colour will really make your eyes pop for a sensational look.

  1. Start by applying a light orchid or violet shadow all over your lids.
  2. Next, blend a rich plum hue into the creases of your eyes, making sure to mix with the violet.
  3. Apply black eyeliner to your lower lash line and lightly smudge.
  4. Add colour to your lower lashes by using a wet brush to apply a layer of lilac eyeshadow over your liner.
  5. Add black eyeliner to your upper lashes before finishing with two coats of mascara.

How to Get a Smokey Eye for Blue Eyes

While a black smokey eye makes blue eyes appear a deeper shade, a smokey eye in bronze makes them appear brighter. Perfect for day or night, this warm shade always looks great on icy blue eyes. As orange is opposite blue on the colour wheel, they are complementary colours, meaning that orange-based bronze and blue look perfect when paired next to each other. Just remember to complete this glowing update by keeping the look lighter on the inner corners of eyes and darker on the outer corners and crease lines.

  1. Start by using a cream-based eyeshadow in light bronze or gold.
  2. Use a small round brush to apply the shadow to lids from lashes to the crease.
  3. Use your ring finger to gently blend the edges of the shadow and to press into the inner corners of your eyes.
  4. Use a rich bronze eyeshadow and apply above the crease of your lid, to the outer corner of your eye and along your lower lash line.
  5. Blend a highlighter along your brow bone and in the inner corners of your eyes.
  6. Apply brown eyeliner to upper lids before finishing with a coat of black mascara.

How to Get a Smokey Eye for Grey Eyes

One of the biggest makeup trends to emerge in recent years is burgundy eyeshadow. While beauty insiders used to steer away from eyeshadows with red undertones for fear that it would make eyes look bloodshot, they now embrace the colour wholeheartedly.  With its rich brown hue, a burgundy smokey eye best suits the steely cool look of grey eyes. Perfect for an alternative to black on a night out, burgundy makes grey eyes smoulder. If you’re still worried about this bold colour being too much, gradually build and layer your shadow until you reach your desired tone.

  1. After applying primer, use a medium flat brush to press burgundy eyeshadow onto your lids from lashes to the crease.
  2. Use a small angled brush and apply the same shadow to your lower lash line.
  3. Use a medium soft brush to apply a matte warm brown or peach shadow on and above the crease of your eye, blending with the burgundy in a sweeping motion.
  4. Rim eyes with a warm brown eyeliner and smudge.
  5. Apply two or three coats of black mascara and pair with a nude lip.

How to Get a Smokey Eye for Hazel Eyes

Just like how blue eyes look good with a complimentary warm shadow, warm hazel eyes look stunning when paired with cool navy tones. The contrasting hue is rich and robust, adding a strong dose of colour to where it’s needed. Although navy has a seductive effect similar to that of the classic black smokey eye, the blue hue still feels more updated and modern than black, making it a fun alternative.

  1. Apply a warm, matte brown eyeshadow on and above the crease of your eye with a soft brush.
  2. Line both lash lines with chocolate brown liner and smudge with a pencil brush.
  3. Press navy eyeshadow onto the outer third of your lids and blend across.
  4. Line the inner rim of your lower lid with black, waterproof liner.
  5. Add shimmery highlighter to the inner corner of your eyes before finishing with mascara.

How to Get a Smokey Eye for Green Eyes

While contrasting colours often work well when it comes to eye makeup, sometimes the most dramatic look is a matching hue. Adding emerald green eyeshadow to your green eyes will create a stunning result, like a sea of green. Exciting, sensual and romantic, this gorgeous colour is perfect for special occasions and playing up your unique eye colour. Just make sure to pick a sparkly, jewel-toned green shadow to avoid looking dull, or worse, ill!

  1. Start by applying cream or nude coloured shadow to your eyelids and creases, as well as to the inner corners of your eyes.
  2. Use a small rounded brush to apply your emerald shadow to the inner corner of your eyes before sweep across your lids.
  3. Apply a dark brown matte shadow to the outer corner of your eye and blend with the emerald.
  4. Use an angled brush to create a wing on the outer corner of your eyes with matte black shadow. Blend back across the crease.
  5. Apply the emerald shadow to your lower lash line, adding the brown shadow to the outer half, and finish with black eyeliner and mascara.

Zoe Sidel Is Fashion’s Modern-Day Medieval Girl Crush – Vogue.com

“Greetings mi’lady!” is how photographer Phil Oh captioned an Instagram of his street style shot of Zoe Sidel. Though the 21-year-old actress and artist (she’s the daughter of actress Rosanna Arquette and the niece of the late actress and transgender activist Alexis Arquette) was captured in modern-day Chinatown outside of the Eckhaus Latta show yesterday, the Shakespearean phrase suits her. Sidel, whose face radiates an ethereal, dewy glow, is equally reminiscent of a subject plucked from a Rembrandt painting. Swathed in a look that evoked feudal luxury, she wore a crinkly gilded sari tied over a Turkmen-style skirt with shocks of blood red, royal blue, and emerald green—all of it fastened together with a metal medallion coin belt. On top, she wore a cropped citrine velvet bodice-corset with puckered white sleeves, adding a slice of allure and a peek of midriff. She added a pendant-choker around the neck—and coyly accessorized that with a fan. (It was a hot day after all.) But the one giveaway piece that proved Sidel is not actually a time-traveling beauty from a world of yesteryear? She wore crimson Maison Margiela Tabi boots that she seamlessly worked into her otherwise medieval getup.

Though plenty of Fashion Week–goers have peacocking on the brain (read: Vetements hoodies in 90-degree weather), Sidel’s look felt less like a sartorial stunt to appeal to street style photographers (even though it did have that effect) and more like a channeling of her true, theatrical self. The actress, who has had mainstream roles in The Bling Ring, as well as has an upcoming part in The Velvet Gentleman, lives the fairy-tale look. Her Instagram @____zoe_bleu____ is a foggy-filtered curation of dark, gothic imagery, dotted at times with undersaturated florals and a recent heartfelt homage to her beloved aunt.

Fashion-wise, Sidel has modeled for the underground cool-kids’ label Moses Gauntlett Cheng, and has her own art collective, @nataeu that she runs with Arielle Chiara and Darius Khonsary. Off-duty you can catch her in the midst of a downtown group of fellow otherworldly beings, like Iranian-American model Leila Rahimi (known for her own outrĂ© look), and the artist and musician Daniela Czenstochowski. In such cool company, and with a sure footing in the art world, Sidel is clearly one to watch. She’s the girl with the Margiela boots—and much, much more.

Why Eating Jell-O Should Be Part of Every Woman’s Nail Care Regimen – POPSUGAR

Though many women are obsessed with their nails, we sure put them through some major abuse. Biting, using them as tools, and peeling off our gel manicures are just a few of the horrible habits we’ll admit to. Manicurists backstage at New York Fashion Week paint dozens of talons per show and only have a few minutes to make them look gorgeous. To make their jobs even more challenging, models are hopping from runway to runway. This means claws are getting cleaned, shaped, and painted, then doused with acetone polish remover before the process starts over again at the next show (resulting in some serious nail stress!). We consulted pros on the most common issues they see, how you can fix them at home, and other top tips.

Brittleness and Peeling

All three of the professionals we consulted declared brittle nails to be the number one problem seen backstage. Jin Soon Choi, seasoned NYFW manicurist and founder/owner of the Jin Soon spas and polish line, cites failure to moisturize, lack of nail maintenance, and malnutrition as sources of this issue. She recommends people with this concern “drink a lot of water” as internal dehydration could be to blame.

Celebrity manicurist Gina Edwards for KISS Products, Inc., shares that dry nail beds are also often caused by constant application of polish remover, which desiccates the nail. Michelle Saunders, celebrity manicurist for Essie, adds, “Brittle nails can be caused from not removing nail polish in due time — found on many models at Fashion Week. Be sure to remove the polish when it starts to chip and apply a good base and top coat.”

White Spots

“The correct name for this nail condition is called ‘leukonychia,'” reports Saunders. “This is caused from slight trauma to the nail bed.” Being gentler on your hands and nails will prevent these from occurring in the future. However, there’s no way to treat them once you have them. “Allow time for them to heal and grow out,” says Edwards.

Breakage

This is commonly caused by lack of moisture to the nail. “Moisturize your nails with cuticle oil a few times a day,” suggests Choi. However, if you take good care of your claws and they’re still cracking on the edges, they may just be too long for your lifestyle. Saunders advises that those with this issue trim and shape their nails weekly.

Splitting

“Nails split because they are dehydrated or because they are paper thin,” Choi says. Saunders agrees and recommends daily use of cuticle oil like the Essie Apricot Cuticle Oil ($9). Choi adds, “Take vitamins that make your nails stronger, such as biotin or fish oil, and eat plenty of dark greens.” Dark green vegetables are rich in calcium, which fortifies your bones as well as your nails.

Soft Nails

“I know a hand model who swears by Jell-O for firming up soft nails,” divulges Choi. “The theory is that the ingredient that makes liquid Jell-O convert to a solid (gelatin!) imparts the same firming effect on your nails.” She confesses that she’s not sure if this sweet-treat trick is scientifically accurate, but she also recommends using a nail strengthener with keratin and protein. We like Jin Soon Power Coat ($18), which, in addition to keratin, biotin, and calcium, contains diamond particles to harden your manicure.

Painful Hangnails

“Hangnails occur when you use your hands a lot,” says Saunders. “Never ever pick, pull, or bite your hangnails.” Edwards recommends preventing this issue by keeping nails hydrated with coconut or jojoba oil. If you want to remove them yourself, Choi offers a solution for removal: “Soak them and snip only the hangnails when they are soft, then moisturize them afterward.”

Mistakes to Avoid

As attractive as they may be, Choi advises that you pass on trying out acrylics. “They can destroy healthy nails, and once that happens, it’s difficult to get them back,” she says. Additionally, if you’ve ever bit off the skin around your nails (we’re guilty!), Edwards begs you to stop. “Not only is it unsanitary, but it can lead to a nail infection if the skin is irritated and open.”

Tips to Follow

Saunders wholeheartedly recommends keeping a soft file, base coat, cuticle oil, quick-dry top coat, and hand cream nearby on a daily basis. After all, if you have access to the proper tools, you’ll use them . . . instead of your teeth. Adds Choi, “Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize — technically that’s three, but I can’t stress it enough!”

Serena Williams pens female-power poem for fashion show – The Tand D.com

NEW YORK (AP) — “She turns her disappointment into triumph. Her grief into joy. Her rejections into approvals. If no one believes in her it does not matter. She believes in herself. Nothing stops her. No one can touch her. She is woman.”

So said Serena Williams via loudspeaker Monday as part of a female-power soundtrack for a runway show of her Serena Williams Signature Statement collection for HSN during New York Fashion Week.

Williams interspersed the long-form poem that she wrote and recited on the soundtrack with music from women only, including her buddy Beyonce’s “Lemonade.”

“I wrote it right after Wimbledon and during the Olympics, and I just was in this moment of I want to empower women,” she explained in a backstage interview.

“It was right around the time I was asked, ‘How do you feel about being the greatest female athlete?’ and I was, like, they never ask men that. I wanted to give women strength. I played it for Beyonce and she loved it.”

The idea, said the tennis great, was to carry that strength and unity into the clothes into her third show. The fall collection of soft faux shearlings, feminine black lace, ivories, touches of soft stretchy leather and classic wool maxi coats in gray and black was available immediately on HSN as Williams joined the “see now, buy now” push that’s become increasingly common during Fashion Week.

She paired dainty stovepipe leggings in a soft rose with long, matching vests and cardigans, a velvet and fur-trimmed dress with sexy pumps, and a black lace gown worn over high-waisted shorts. And she included knits in a Merlot and touches of fall green.

The sophistication spoke to her years in fashion, along with her sister, Venus, who focuses on athleisure wear for another company. Are they competitive in fashion as well as tennis?

“It is very competitive spirit, but we’re in totally different fields,” Serena smiled. “She’s into more sportswear and I’m into more ready-to-wear, and more sportswear, too.”

Her older sis was on hand front row to cheer Williams on. So how does Venus feel about some friendly sisterly competition?

“We give each other confidence, so if your sister likes it you know it’s going to be OK,” Venus said. “Your sister always tells you the truth. We definitely help each other out and give suggestions. And that’s the way sisters should be.”

Williams won Wimbledon this year but lost in the semifinals at the U.S. Open. She tied with Steffi Graf’s Grand Slam record of 22. She also tied Graf’s record until this week as the No. 1 female player in the world for 186 weeks.

Asked if getting back to No. 1 is a top priority, Williams responded: “Right now I’m focused on fashion and then when I’m not I’m focused on Grand Slams. I always love having goals.”
