GALESBURG — The coming weekend, August 19-21, will see between 700 and 800 Civil War era re-enactors from 16 states converge on Lake Storey for the annual Galesburg Heritage Days.
The biggest part of the annual event is the Civil War battle re-enactments. Saturday, the battle will open with a ceremony at 2:30 p.m., with the battle lasting much of the afternoon. Ceremony time is 2 p.m. Sunday, with a completely different battle scenario than Saturday, according to Mark Ebner, host and master of ceremonies.
The days will be filled with activities, vendors, food and re-enactors. During the morning, speakers portraying luminaries such as Clara Barton and Abraham Lincoln, as well as local Civil War era figures including Mary Ann Bickerdyke and Mary Allen West will speak during the morning. Professional Abraham Lincoln actor Max Daniels will return this year for the final time, as he is retiring after performing as Lincoln for over 20 years.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, Mindy Knapp will teach about Victorian Era hairstyles for women, as well as men’s hair and facial hair styles. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a dance open to the public, with vintage dance steps being taught and called out.
On hand on the encampment side will be horses and full size civil war artillery. Visitors will be able to visit with enactors throughout the day. At 9 p.m. Saturday, there will be a night firing of the artillery, loaded with black powder and fireworks to put on a light show.
Lisa Bernhart told of the many educational and family friendly attractions of the rendezvous side of camp. Last year, there was a new NativeAmerican encampment and it will be expanded on this year. There will be many vendors and shops. There are blacksmiths, coppersmiths, a silversmith, crafts and a candlemaker, where kids will be able to dip their own candles for $1. According to Bernhart, the Fair Wynd Circus is a huge draw.
The Saturday night meal will include a full roasted hog, and the kitchen opens for breakfast at 7 a.m.
Bernhart is especially excited about the Lewis and Clark Fife and Drum club which will be playing at the battle ceremonies. Made up of children, she called them “the best fife and drummers” she’d ever seen.
There will be horse and wagon rides back and forth between the camps as well as shuttle service, which is handicapped accessible. Camp closes Sunday at 4 p.m.
Both Bernhart and Ebner stressed that the event is educational and family friendly. As in previous years, parking and admission is free, but donations are welcome.
