The Best Men’s Hairstyles of 2016 – Coach

Be honest with yourself: that much-needed trim has been at the bottom of your long list of priorities for far too long, hasn’t it? Of course, there may be plenty of other stuff that seems more important than tending to your locks, but like every other style trend, in-demand hairstyles come and go fast. That means the longer you leave it, the greater the chance of your ’do looking wholly outdated.

That’s why we’ve asked Ruffians Barber Shop’s in-house grooming expert Adam Brady to detail the looks you should be asking for as you plonk yourself in the salon chair. Read on, find your favourite and bump ‘Get My Hair Sorted’ up that to-do list.

Ask for: A Centralised Side Parting

What’s that? “This one’s so new that not even the celebs have caught on yet. In fact, the best place to see it is on super-influential Aussie hairdresser’s Morris Motley’s Instagram account. It’s a more wearable version of the strict centre partings which were all over the men’s Fashion Week catwalks this year. The style is long on top and shorter on the back and sides, with a side parting that creeps slightly towards the centre.”

Who does it suit? “It works for pretty much every face shape, but it’s best avoided if you have curly hair.”

How do I style it? “Rub some pomade (for hold) and paste (for a natural finish) into your hands. Apply to damp hair from the roots, and rake through your hair with your fingers to create a parting slightly more central than your natural side parting. Keep going until everything’s in place.”

What’s its facial hair match? “It’s quite a smart and preppy look. You’re best off going clean-shaven with this one.”

Ask for: Texture On Top

What’s that? “A favourite of Eddie Redmayne and Jamie Dornan, this haircut’s long, natural and textured on top, shorter on the sides for contrast, and with weight taken off the back but left slightly heavier at the front. You’ll want to have natural-looking products in the bathroom for this. Think salt spray, powder or dust, plus paste for shine.”

Who does it suit? “Anyone with a slightly longer face as the extra weight and texture deemphasizes narrow foreheads. It also works well with medium-thick wavy hair.”

How do I style it? “Towel dry your hair, and give it a once-over with your salt spray while still damp. Then scrunch with your hands for added texture. Sprinkle dust into the roots, making sure to really get down to the scalp so it doesn’t stick to your tips. Get a glossy finish with a paste or cream.”

What’s its facial hair match? “A bit of stubble will add to this style’s ‘just got out of bed’ vibe.”

Ask for: Mid-Length Locks

What’s that? “Hair that comes down to just above the shoulders is a big trend for 2016. If you’ve got longer hair obviously you can cut it short, otherwise it’ll need to be grown out for eight to 12 months. Think Kit Harington and Henry Cavill’s lengthy locks. Make sure you go to a reputable stylist to get this look – many barbers won’t be confident handling longer hair like this.”

Who does it suit? “A guy with masculine, angular features and a square jaw – or anyone aiming for a more feminine vibe. It’s definitely not for anybody with thinning or receding hair.”

How do I style it? “Always allow your hair to dry naturally if you’ve got curly or wavy hair because blow-drying will cause major frizz. Apply a mousse or pomade to damp hair and scrunch with your hands so it doesn’t get dry.”

What’s its facial hair match? “Stubble or a short beard is good to give you that masculine edge. Dodge the full-on frontiersman beard though – that’s a bit much.”

Ask for: A Choppy Fringe

What’s that? “Short back and sides with a textured and weighty top, brought down over the forehead with a natural finish. Another one that’s big in the fashion world.”

Who does it suit? “It’ll make your face seem squarer, so go for this if you have a longer face. It’s also a good remedy for anyone with a receding hairline as it can conceal your finer patches.”

How do I style it? “Blow-dry your hair forward, add salt spray while still damp, tousle your hair on top and continue to blow-dry forward. Apply some paste to the roots, and then brush forward while blow-drying. Finally, arrange your fringe with your fingers, remembering that ‘choppy’ is the key to this working.”

What’s its facial hair match? “A clean shave. This cut matches perfectly with angular faces, so let those features out from behind the beard.”

Ask for: A Spiky Top

What’s that? “A strong ’90s look as seen on Zayn Malik, Zac Efron and Liam Hemsworth. It’s the same length all over (although shorter on the sides works too) and styled into spikes on top. We’re predicting this will be a big one in the coming months, especially with a coloured treatment so that the roots show through a bit.”

Who does it suit? “It’s an absolute winner for anybody that has thick hair and a sharper bone structure.”

How do I style it? “Sprinkle a texturising dust into the roots of dry hair and spread out around the head. Or use a rough matt clay.”

What’s its facial hair match? “Go for some stubble. A beard is a big no-no here.”
