Ensley Kohout has added another crown to her shelf when she won “Miss Lawton Outstanding Teen” recently, which is her first step in to a new pageant circuit – The Miss America circuit.
Ensley and her mom Missy hope this win will get her started on the Miss America path.
Ensley said the process was a little different then other pageants she had done in the past.
“You go to breakfast and the judges come in and you don’t really talk to them, they just lined up and told us about themselves,” Ensley said. “It’s really scary because you are sitting there with like food in front of you but you have to be very proper, because those are the judges.”
Kohout said the one-on-one interviews were more nerve-racking, because about five judges asked questions while the contestants stood behind a podium.
“It’s a little intimidating but they were all really nice and once I loosened up it wasn’t too scary,” she said. “They ask you questions about yourself and your platform and your opinion on things.”
Ensley’s platform for all of her pageants has been “body positivity.”
“I think body positivity is super important because men, women – everybody are trying to achieve this ‘perfect’ body that isn’t real and even the people who have the ‘perfect’ bodies still don’t like their body,” she said.
A big difference for this pageant is the backstage rules.
“The parents have to leave the dressing rooms,” said Missy. “We are not allowed to be back there anytime during the pageant. It’s just the contestants – that’s all – they do their own costume changes, their own make-up, they do their own hair. They do everything by themselves. So she was all alone, a little 13 year old back there by herself.”
Ensley said it was hard at first but she got use to it.
“They have some people to help you zip up but I changed my hair styles in between (events),” she said. “That was the most stressful part because I do have a stylist … so I had to learn how to do those hairstyles. They were nowhere near as good as she could have done them. It turned out ok, but it was a little scary.”
Even with the nerves, she still won interview and the talent parts of the pageant.
The next round of Miss America for Ensley is to compete June 2017 for Miss Oklahoma Outstanding Teen and Ensley said she will have fun no matter what.
“One of my goals is to just get use to the process, because it is a lot different because I haven’t done that many pageants, so I think it will be a good learning experience for me,” Ensley said. “I hope that I win, but I think the experience is more important than the crown at the end of the day.”
Another goal by doing the Miss America circuit is to bring her platform to more people.
“She’s hoping that the Miss America system will open some doors for her as far as being able to talk to people at schools,” said Missy. “The Miss America pageant is so well respected that it will open some doors and she be able to talk some young ladies.”
Ensley said she wants more people to realize “they are beautiful.”
“The problem with media and everything we are being told is wrong because we were made the way we were supposed to be made,” she said. “God made us in His image and He made us beautiful the way we are and we shouldn’t have to feel like we have to change.
“Model have stretch marks, models have cellulite but it’s hidden because of Photoshop but that’s not real and I want to be real and I want to be an example to girls who feel like they have to live up to this impossible standard, because no one ever has.”
