School turns away students with long, ‘blondish’ hair – Global Times

Things got hairy during registration at an East China vocational high school that threatened to turn away students donning dyed ‘dos or anything short of a buzz cut.

Barbers were standing by as incoming freshman to the Xiamen Industrial and Commercial Tourism School in Fujian Province registered for classes.

School officials said all male freshmen must be shorn to 6 millimeters while bangs are not allowed on females, citing dress code violations.

What’s more, any student with curly or “blondish” hair must get a doctor’s note proving that it’s natural – or face being denied enrollment.

The code aims to get students whipped into shape ahead of entering the workforce, a school employee explained.

Students cut to the chase with their disapproval. “Professional schools are not like regular high schools … how can we hunt for a job with such dumb hair?” said student Zhang Hua.

“This simply kills my personality,” said another student, who called the move a “violation of his basic rights.”

Parents seem to be on board. “If the school allows all kinds of hairstyles, kids will show up with frizzed out hair dyed like a rainbow,” said one mother.
